On Tuesday afternoon, the governor of Chiapas, Rutilio Escandón, reported the detention of the alleged murderer of priest Marcelo Pérez. "My recognition to the authorities of the Attorney General's Office, who have informed me that the material author of Father Marcelo's death has been detained."
The attack against the religious leader occurred last weekend in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas. A man identified as Edgar “N” shot the priest while he was in his truck after officiating mass at his church located in the Cuxtitali neighborhood.
The Attorney General's Office of Chiapas indicated that the capture of Edgar “N” occurred following field and desk forensic investigations. Two days after the events, an arrest warrant was executed against the alleged material author.
"Given the death of Father Marcelo Pérez Pérez, the Attorney General's Office of the State began the corresponding investigations to identify those responsible," mentions an official statement.
